Review of Square Point of Sale for Restaurants, Cafes & Hospitality Bookkeeping

The decision to purchase or upgrade your point of sale ( POS) is not an easy one.
There are many factors to consider including:
  • The cost vs the benefits.
  • The time to learn and understand the platform.
  • Ease of navigation.
  • How the platform works with other systems including QuickBooks.
  •  Accessibility. Is it cloud based?
  • Reaching support at critical times of system crash or malfunction.
  • The level of reporting desired. Purchasing the right level of technology for your needs.

Today’s article will focus on the Square POS. I will review the features and benefits from a bookkeepers perspective.

The Benefits of Square POS.

  • Cloud based.
  • Easy to navigate dashboard.
  • Clear reporting with the key metrics displayed in simple terms.
  • Revenue, tax and tips are focal points for the dashboard.
  • Specialty reports such as Square loans are easily accessible with a click.
  • Detailed reporting such as item reordering, multi store management, customer relationship management & purchase order are available.
  • QuickBooks integration is available via an APP.
  • Cost is affordable.

Square Downsides:

  • Not a complete inventory system. ( tracking ingredients per dish )
  • Physical inventory is needed to calculate cost of goods sold.
  • Does not replace a full HR system for employee management.

Summary:

As a professional bookkeeper, who works with Square every day, I recommend this platform. The reports are easy to use. The layout is super easy to follow. The cost is right.

The cloud based nature makes it a good choice. Square can be linked to QuickBooks. It is not essential as the reports highlight the key metrics.
